LinkedIn Tip - Making the Most of Status

What's your "status" or present focus? This is what's most important to you right now, this week. You edit this field in the left column menu just below the green "Add Connections" button. What might your message be?

If you're unemployed, it might read

I am seeking contacts at Exmplar Associates and GE Medical or I am seeking assistance with updating my resume for a career change.

If you're an entrepreneur, it might read I am seeking assistance creating a website for my business.

or

I seeking advisors who might review my business plan and others who are knowledgeable in leads generation.

In other roles and situations, it might read I am seeking referrals to professionals who might assist me with aging parents or I am working on building an international network of food purveyors or I am planning a trip to the Beijing Olympics

Note - you need not always be making a request.

This status message remains active for 5 days, then disappears until you choose to enter another.

This information will appear in your profile and will be visible by your choice in "Accounts & Settings" to be shared with just your connections, or your entire network or if you choose the entire LinkedIn network. It will also be viewed in Home Page Network Updates the day you edit it.

This is a great way to connect with your network. Personal experience and great results as a recruiter has surprised me. I've received more responses using this feature than posting jobs in newsletters and on job boards. Discover how it might help you.

Hidden jobs are welcomed for sharing at jobs@augustgroup.org.  If the job your neighbor, friend or family shared with you is not right for you, it might be perfect for an August Group colleague.  This is a great place for practicing "give to get." We welcome volunteers to coordinate the job postings on a weekly basis. Employers and members submit jobs that must be readied for inclusion in the newsletter.  A lack of help means fewer jobs get posted in a timely manner. Why not be the first one to see new postings??!!

When you need help, ask!

This is an excerpt from my book, Getting There: Driving High Performance Strategies and Tactics for Career Decisions. The book should be in print in just a few weeks.

This short section is about the fact that you can't go on a job search alone. For that matter, you really can't solve life's problems by yourself!
Here is the excerpt:

Ask for Help

About ten years ago I traveled to San Antonio for a conference. Part of the conference agenda was a golf tournament to benefit a college scholarship fund. In the spirit of participation and camaraderie, I signed up for the tournament even though I rarely play golf (sports car racing is my pastime).

Teams were chosen, and we went out in the wonderful Texas sunshine. As my foursome approached the first tee, I was quite apprehensive about my large handicap. I was very nervous as I addressed the ball. After a couple of awkward practice swings I took a shot, and the ball snaked through the grass for about twenty yards. The members of my group rolled their eyes in dismay. It was going to be a long day.

We bantered and told jokes as we played, but they could scarcely hide their contempt for my lousy game. My score was triple digits by the fifteenth hole. As I addressed the ball for the sixteenth tee, I asked one of the better players, "What am I doing wrong?" He came to where I was standing and helped me with various tips and advice. Heeding his advice, my shots improved significantly for the sixteenth, seventeenth, and eighteenth holes. I felt relieved, and the other guys actually smiled a few times. I asked my helper, "Why didn't you tell me before?" He said, "Because you never asked . . ." What a lesson I learned in that instant.

I still don't play golf, but I have improved in many other areas of importance to me by simply looking for help from those who are successful.

With very, very few exceptions, successful people are ready to help. In fact, I have found that the more successful the person is, in any endeavor-in their profession, in their sports or hobbies, or in any other aspect of their life-the more likely they are to extend a hand and help.

If you need help, ask for it.

Mt. Kilimanjaro

Since I conduct over 100 seminars each year, I get to meet a lot of wonderful, interesting people. I like to think that I share powerful ideas that have the potential to change people's lives.

I am honored to receive many nice e-mails from people who've taken my ideas and have accomplished something amazing.

A gentleman named Kurt, from Wisconsin, did just that and I was very impressed with what he did. I'll let him tell you what happened...

"At your seminar in the Madison, Wisconsin area in December, I mentioned to you that at a presentation you gave in Milwaukee a couple of years ago you were asking people for examples of goals they had set and accomplished.

A fellow mentioned that he had climbed Mt. Kilimanjaro with his 17 year- old son and I thought to myself IF HE CAN DO IT I SURE CAN.

When I got home that day after your seminar, I asked if anyone wanted t o climb Mt. Kilimanjaro with me, and the only affirmative response was my 17 year-old son James.

So, about 10 months later there we were on top of the mountain.

I felt at that point that I could do anything in the world I set my mind to doing. And I have you to thank, Boaz. You asked me for an email with the details - so I am attaching the journal I kept, and a photo of us at the top."

There is no need for me to go into the details of Kurt's journal. Let me just say that his journey with his son to the top of Mt. Kilimanjaro was simply amazing.

Keep in mind that Kurt was not experienced at mountain climbing. He had never done anything like this before. He did not have a clear picture of every detail and every obstacle ahead of time. He simply had a clear dream.

Or, as Napoleon Hill states in the book "Think and Grow Rich", he had a BURNING DESIRE!

The only difference between Kurt and his son James, and most everyone else, is that they took action.

They were decisive in their decision and commitment. They were climbing to the top of Mt. Kilimanjaro. And the pictures that Kurt sent me, of the two of them at the top of the mountain, proved that they accomplished their goal.

Is there a Mt. Kilimanjaro, or something similar, in your dreams? Wake up those dreams and make them a reality by taking a small first step.

Kurt's first small step was to say "If he can do it, I sure can!"

And I say, YOU CAN TOO! Take some action on something important you've been thinking about TODAY!

You are special. You are unique. You are destined for greatness! Have a powerful week!

A Mountain Climbing Affirmation

I can climb any mountain in my life. I am a champion!

The August Group registers with LinkedIn

LinkedIn Groups add Authentication

LinkedIn has enhanced the value of Groups recently adding an authentication procedure. Previously it was assumed that LinkedIn members would honorably list in their profiles those groups to which they were truly belonged. It’s been observed that this is not the case. LinkedIn refined the Groups function. Now groups can register with LinkedIn and one’s membership in a group must be authenticated. When authenticated your profile will display the group’s logo in your profile.

The Value of LinkedIn Groups

What’s the value of Groups? To connect with other LinkedIn members you must know them well enough to invite them. It is assumed that people you know well, that you’ll know their email address. It’s also assumed that if you are a member of a group that you may share common interests yet not know all members well enough to have their email addresses. The August Group would be a great example. Members from 2002 are not likely to bump into members of 2005 or today, yet all share a common interest in networking.

The Value of Joining The August Group’s LinkedIn Group

When a new member joins The August Group they come seeking connections in general sessions at The Bagel Bin or St. Cecilia’s. The challenge is that they are limited to making connections with only those people they meet in that session. There are now 1000’s who have attended The August Group and who qualify as members. If you take each member and their LinkedIn connections each member would have access to millions of connections and contacts online. The most difficult challenge is finding contacts. LinkedIn enables the finding. The August Group facilitates making the connections real with warm introductions and face to face meetings. All August Group members benefit adding their affiliation to The August Group to their LinkedIn profile. If you’re looking to connect to millions, and that is not an exaggerated claim, then become a LinkedIn member and join The August Group within LinkedIn.

Joining LinkedIn and LinkedIn’s August Group Group (Did I say that correctly?)

Joining LinkedIn is easy. Go to LinkedIn and you can become a member in 2-3 minutes. To learn more about this tool either play with it or visit the Upcoming Events section to learn about upcoming training.

To join the LinkedIn Group for The August Group there are two requirements.

  1. You must demonstrate your networking inclination and abilities. The August Group is all about networking and making connections. The mantra is “Give to get.” Members who practice this will have the 50 connections required to become a member of this group. When you have achieved 50 connections you will have demonstrated that you too are a connector.

NOTE – you can be a member of The August Group, with less than 50 LinkedIn connections. You WILL NOT be a member of The August Group’s LinkedIn Group until you reach 50 connections.

  2. We will verify your participation in The August Group either past or present.

No one will be initially rejected for failing either of these requirements. After your request is made you will have 30 days to meet both authentication and 50 connections requirements. If these requirements are not met in that time frame your request will be rejected and you will be instructed as to how you might achieve membership in the future. If connecting to millions or simply hundreds matters to you and will assist you, then join LinkedIn, learn the tool and connect with The August Group within LinkedIn.

For the skeptical go to the Media Coverage page where articles from Fortune, Wall Street Journal, New York Times, Time and other leading publications regularly feature this game changing online application that is networking for professionals. You'll find the Fortune Magazine article "Why you'll finally use LinkedIn" most interesting.
