I used to watch a show on VH1 called Driven. It would feature a pop icon and show the story of how that person became famous. I would watch a person, with a childhood much like my own, travel a road to super-stardom and I would think to myself that the only real difference between that person and me is that that person did it and I didn’t. I never believed that these individuals were the most talented at what they did. I would watch drummers or guitar players and be sure that I had friends sitting in their basements who could out-drum or out-strum any of them. And it wasn’t that I necessarily desired to be a pop icon. What grabbed me the most was their passion and perseverance, their declaration that they would reach a specific goal. And they did achieve these goals, often in the face of great adversity. So, why do so many of us continue to feel trapped in some way, shape, or form?
The concept of personal accountability is simple, but implementing it seems to be another story. Accountability is about how we’re feeling and what we’re doing that causes us to feel this way. First, notice that it is what WE are doing that causes these feelings. Simply accepting this concept puts us on the road to success. When we feel powerless, trapped, and victimized, what are we doing at this time? Are we blaming, complaining, or simply waiting and hoping for something to change? When we feel responsible and empowered, what are we doing at that time? Most of us would notice that we are taking ownership and making something happen. When we are paralyzed by negative emotions or a lack of awareness, we trap ourselves from being able to act in effective ways. It is important to be able to recognize our own cues when we are feeling frustrated and victimized so we can shorten the amount of time we spend “stuck” there. Once we recognize that we are behaving unaccountably, we can consciously change our mindset and decide what actions will yield desirable results. Then, what’s most important is that we DO these things. It is at this point when we feel powerful and refreshed.
The reason this is not easy is because acting unaccountably is a habit for many people. Changing a habit or creating a new one requires a journey through multiple steps. There must be an awareness that something can be changed. I am telling you right now that if you feel trapped and victimized, it can be different and YOU can make it happen. There must also be a desire to change. If you are thinking right now that this is hokey or not possible or too difficult, then a change will not take place for you. Think of a person who knows she needs to quit smoking but doesn’t really want to quit. Even if she’s “trying,” it will not work. There must be a desire. The mind is truly that powerful that it can be conducive or destructive to change. A person must have the knowledge of how and what to change. What if a person wants to lose weight but thinks that increasing sugar and fat intake is the way to get those results or doesn’t even know that exercise and eating healthy contribute to weight loss? His efforts would be counterproductive or none would be taken at all. The more a person knows about how to lose weight, the better his chances of doing so. Having an awareness, a desire, and the right knowledge only equals having an intent. Unless this intent is taken to ACTION, no change can take place. Try it. Even if it feels awkward at first, celebrate your progress to keep you motivated. Finally, and most importantly, there must be a commitment to perseverance. If you slip, you cannot simply throw in the towel. It is crucial to plan for this so you could quickly pick up the pieces and get back on track. Over time, the change is more comfortable and becomes a habit.
You can be more successful in any area of your life by adopting a mindset of personal accountability and practicing. This is a big task but you can do it! The question is, will you?
