Time for a reality check…

Contributed by TAG member Dan Kinney (Durham, NC)

Day after day goes by and I am amazed at what is happening in today’s society. One of the first things I look at on my way to work every day is the price of gas at the pump and I cringe at how fast and how much it is and has gone up in just the past couple of weeks. And then I turn on the news and all I hear about is that sometime this year the price per gallon of gas will be pushing or exceeding $4.00 or even $5.00. I don’t know about you, but that really scares me. The economy can’t take it any more. When we experienced higher gas prices in the 70’s it was blamed on an oil shortage and we were forced to ration gas and drive smaller cars. What is causing the higher fuel prices now? Corporate greed and a weak dollar. If you haven’t noticed the profits at the Oil Companies are through the roof and the buying power of the dollar is way down. The average American is being squeezed harder and harder for every dime they make and then they are delivered a pink slip and told that we aren’t needed any more. Yet the high end Corporate CEO’s are making millions in corporate buyouts as they cause corporations to fail and force the average person out on the street. Where are the high paying jobs that made America the dream place to live in? They are all going overseas to countries whose cost of living is much less then ours.

It seems we are in a catch 22 situation. We have done it to ourselves and we don’t know how to stop it. We are in a deep recession although most of us seem to be in denial. The average American is being forced to do more with less; yet we keep going on like we have all become accustomed too in the 70’s, 80’s and 90’s. We all became fat, dumb and happy. Now the bottom is falling out around us and we are still spending like it grows on trees.

I am a huge sports fan and there is another industry that has grown out of control. The salaries that are being paid to today’s professional athletes is mind boggling and they keep going up along with the price of tickets to the games and we as stupid Americans with blinders on keep paying the prices and the Athletes keep putting their hand out demanding more and getting it. Then there are the greedy owners who want new Stadium’s and Arenas with all the current days’ comforts. Who pays for that? We the fans do that’s who. We the fan pay for it all and we can’t afford it anymore either. But we are fans and we want to see our favorite team win the World Series, Super Bowl or Stanley Cup. Isn’t that one of the American dreams like owning a house which is a story for a different day?

When is it all going to end? Not until we the Average American stops living in the past and starts living in the new world; a world where America is no longer the King of the Hill. We did it to ourselves with the help of a few corporate crooks and unethical politicians.

Gone are the high paying jobs that we all became accustomed too. As we all begin to look for new jobs we have to tighten our belt. I am part of the Baby Boom Generation and had to face the harsh reality of looking for employment in my late 50’s. It was hard and I was forced to move from my home town of Rochester where I was born and raised so that I won’t have to take a job as a Wal-Mart greeter. Not only are our jobs going overseas, but the foreign workers are coming to America and taking our jobs. I saw it happening in the former Corporation I worked for and I see it today in the new Corporation I work for. But what you don’t see are these foreigner’s at Sporting events paying hundreds of dollars for tickets and wearing $300 Jersey’s with our favorite players name on the back who doesn’t even play for my favorite team anymore because he got a better offer from another team.

I went to an NHL Hockey game recently to see my favorite team the Buffalo Sabres play which is a real treat now that I live in Durham, NC. In years past I would have spend the money to sit in the best seat I could get. But with reality looking at me in the mirror, I went for the cheaper seat. I saved money, but I still enjoyed myself. Now if I could only convince myself not to go at all; that would be an accomplishment. But as a true American I still have my passions and until the day comes when I am paying $5.00 for gas I will slowly wean myself away from my addictions.

We grew up in the best of times. I look back at how we lived in the 70’s to what we have today and I am at awe with the advances in technology. But now we live in a different world and times are changing. I never would have dreamed that Kodak would be a shell of the company it once was. Will Kodak even survive in today’s world? I am just glad I am not a young adult starting out in today’s world. They are already behind the eight ball as they have to have today’s toys (Cell phones, Blackberry’s, the latest Video Games, high end HDTV’s, Cable TV, Satellite Radio, etc.). At least as Baby Boomers we didn’t have all these creature comforts sucking up our hard earned money; we could save some for retirement. What are today’s young workers going to do on the salaries they are forced to make? I’m glad it’s them and not me.

Thanks for listening and start tightening your belt if you haven’t already done so. I think we are in for a long recession.

Good luck with your job searches and don’t be afraid to look beyond Rochester. It is a lot warmer down here in Durham, NC and I’m glad I was forced to make the move. Otherwise I would still be back in Rochester complaining about another long cold winter.

The August Group is helping you today; don’t forget to help the August Group by giving back tomorrow. You never know if you will be needing them in the future and if you don’t give back they might not be there for you to lean on tomorrow.
