Member Announcements

Darlene Russell -career in transition

I am a returning member of the August Group. I was a member 4 years ago and was changing careers at that time. I had been in the Purchasing field, mainly in the manufacturing environment, for over 15 years and was looking for a change. The experience I gained volunteering allowed me to create a new resume targeted toward the non-profit human services field.

I was unemployed for 6 months and attended the August Group general sessions as well as John Bayley's power networking group. I learned a lot about networking, conducted numerous informational interviews, and met a lot of great people. I gave my resume to my hairdresser and told her I was looking for work in the non-profit sector and the next thing I know I am working for one of her hairdressing clients at Catholic Charities. I was hired as a Transitional Case Manager in the HIV/AIDS field. This was a position that I would have never applied for because I thought I did not have the qualifications, but the agency thought I did. I worked there for almost 4 years and learned a lot, met a lot of great people.

But after doing this work for a few years, I found it was really not my calling and really needed to find something different. I decided to quit and spend my time finding my life's passion, doing things I enjoy and listening to my inner voice. I have been doing a lot of hiking, snowshoeing (when I can find snow), reading and spending time with friends and family. I had a few part-time, "bridge jobs" that were seasonal and am looking for a part time painting job to bring in some money. I am interested in the field of training, coaching and the mind, body, spirit connection. I started a group called Unleashing Your Calling to support others and myself on this path of self discovery. If you are interested in this group or anything else I have mentioned please contact me at canoe@localnet.com.

CareerXRoads – Sources of Hires Study

Reality (Hockey Style)

Contributed by Daryl Walczak

I watched with interest the National Hockey League “Trade Tracker” as the 3:00 p.m. deadline on February 26, 2008 approached. I wanted to know whether or not my Buffalo Sabres had signed defenseman Brian Campbell or if he would be the latest All-Star player to leave western New York. By 11:30 a.m. I had my answer. He had been traded to the San Jose Sharks for a former 1st round draft pick and San Jose’s 1st round pick in the 2008 draft.

Many in western New York bemoaned the decision as additional proof that the Buffalo Sabres have no intention of putting a winning team on the ice. These people continued to throw stones at Sabres owner Tom Golisano for his style of ownership, which they fear deals too much with the “bottom line” and not enough with winning the Stanley Cup.

While there might be a degree of truth to their fear, fans need to try and understand the differences in the reality of the situation. Mr. Golisano’s reality is that he is a businessman who likes making money. He also allowed the NHL to continue in western New York at a time where it appeared as though the Sabres were doomed to move to another city.

I, too, am a fan. And I also would like to see the Sabres win the Stanley Cup. However, the fans reality of “win at all costs” does not necessarily jibe the owner’s reality of making a profit. The fans would like ownership to spend to the salary cap, attract the best players, and win every year. Ownership would like to spend as judiciously as possible, attract players that fit into their economic model, have people pay to see them play, and make money. A different view of reality renders a completely different picture.

That is important to realize as we move through our daily lives. Our point of view serves us. Other people’s points of view serve them. Occasionally, those points of view overlap and we find common ground with others. But if we don’t find that common ground, at least try to understand how different realities might shape people’s views.
