FEATURE ARTICLES

Resolve + Support = Success with Cheer

Self Empowerment & Accountability

contributed by Susan Nau and her “Cheer” peers

You may ask yourself, "Where’s my motivation?" You know the urgency to find a job. Where can you find your motivation to keep going when you think your resume is in a black hole and no one returns your calls?

You may have a job search strategy, attended workshops, met with the August Group for networking.  Now what? You are seeing the same faces and the same situation. Something has to change.  What else can you do?  What else do you need?

Those are the questions I asked myself.  Here are my conclusions:

  • People in the same situation can help to me get more motivated.  Since I don’t have a job yet, I need to do something different.

  • Enlist friends and TAG members that understand, encourage and give support while we go through the long process of a search for the right job.

  • Plan and attend a weekly meeting where everyone is accountable for their goals.

  • Vent frustration, sadness or report successes.

I know I need people around to challenge and cheer me on for small successes and others probably need the same.

As a result of recognizing those needs, I invited two other TAG members to join me each week and talk about our job search. I thought it would be an uplifting thing for me. However, I didn’t have a clue how much it would benefit them. We have a powerful energy level emerging from this group. We needed to give it a name that fits the mission.

Here are the points the three of us we agreed upon:

  1. We’re all Directors of our own lives and of our group. It’s a little more than networking, it’s an encouragement group.

  2. Each week we have goals and challenges that we assign each other and we keep one another on task.

  3. We’ll call ourselves the “Cheer” team. The smallness of the group makes it manageable to organize and finish our meeting in a reasonable timeframe.

  4. We bring resources, ideas or books to the table to help each other.

  5. When we find a job, new members will come into the group and keep the cheering and encouragement alive.

Currently, one member is very close to getting a job offer.  It’s been a long journey for her because she spent nine months looking.  It’s time for that great job to show up.

There’s one significant thing I’ve learned from this group. Your “attitude” is your Altitude!

If you have a story to share or feedback, send it to newsletter@augustgroup.org

RECRUITER’S TIP – Giving Your Resume the “Acid Test

Contributed by Gene Voss gvoss@frontiernet.net

Resumes are scanned and not read in the initial screening process.  This is my resume-scanning test to see what jumps off the page in the first few seconds:

  1. Give your resume to someone with these instructions:  “I will hand you my resume and I will give you ten seconds to read it.  When I call time, I want you to turn it over and tell me everything that you read.”

  2. Listen carefully to their response.  If what you hear is the image that you want to present to a hiring manager, your resume passed the test.  On the other hand, if the image misses important aspects of your personality, skills, background, accomplishments, etc. or is just not as positive as you would like, then you will need to make some format changes.

  3. Repeat the test until you are comfortable with what is read in a scan.  You can use the same friend to help since this is a test of what is read and not what they know about you.

You’ll see that rarely will someone make it to page two of a resume in ten seconds.  Consequently, you’ll want your strengths on page one.  As an example, a common strength or weakness is education.  If you think it helps, page one, if it hinders you, page two.   Here are some format strategies to increase the odds that someone will read your strengths:

  1. Strengths on page one of the resume.

  2. Bold, underline or place at the beginning of a paragraph.

  3. Bullet items and keep paragraphs small.

  4. Use verbs in your resume that are often associated with the type of job you seek.  For example: “managed”, “directed”, “trained”, “created”, “organized”, “developed”, “decided” and “implemented” are often the words used by and associated with candidates for management jobs.

Have a question, you’d like to ask of a recruiter?

Send it to Q&A@augustgroup.org

NETWORKING TIP - Requesting Contact Leads

Networking is the exchanging of information and sharing of connections where both parties experience mutual benefit.  There are usually two parties and each has a role that can maximize the experience and benefit of building new connections.

Requesting contacts

When seeking assistance from others be sure that you communicate clearly the types of connections that you are seeking.  Identify the role of the person you desire to meet, the industry that they are in and the purpose of your desired connection.  When seeking the assistance of others always state a personal desire to make a connection one that is mutually rewarding offering your assistance to them as well.

When you are given the name of a contact understand the relationship between the person giving the referral and the referred contact.  Ask about their relationship knowing how mature and enduring it is.  Request advice from the referring source as to how best to approach this person, by email or phone at work or at home.  You might ask if they would be kind enough to alert the referred contact with a call or email prior to your making contact.  There response will affirm the strength of their connection.  There is nothing better than a personal introduction in a face-to-face meeting.  Only suggest or request this when you have previously facilitated significant connections yourself for the referring professional.

When making your first connection with the referred, announce your name and that you are referred by so-and-so immediately.  In email your Subject line will read, “Referred by Chris Smith.”  When making an initial contact by phone, wear a smile as you speak and always ask if you are calling at a convenient time for them.  If not ask for an appointed time to call them back.  When leaving voicemails, be brief repeating your name and phone number twice and mention your referral source.  State that you will follow-up with another call.  Do not expect others to return your phone calls simply because you requested them to.

Always, always, always follow-up with your referring source reporting your progress on referred contacts making certain to again express your gratitude for their assistance and again asserting that you would like to help them in any means possible.   Follow-up might be ongoing as your relationship matures.  It pays to make the referring source feel appreciated.  You may find more referrals coming forward for doing so.

Next week – How to give referrals that count

Have a question, you’d like to ask on networking?  Send it to Q&A@augustgroup.org
