email to
AnnounceMe@augustgroup.org.
In the subject line describe your announcement as "Member Announcement,"
"Now Working," or "Seeking Contacts." The last descriptor is good
for entrepreneurs. If you have suggestions to this section you can submit them
to the same email address with "Suggestion" in the Subject Line. It is
suggested members include their contact information in their announcement
as this organization is about making connections, but it is NOT required
that member's share their email address nor phone number. Failing to do so is
less effective certainly and remains a matter of personal choice. Former Employers - List prior employer(s) Target - list job titles, roles, employers

FEATURE ARTICLES It seemed like a crime had been committed; released from a job I enjoyed, I hadn’t done anything wrong. People I had enjoyed working with everyday would no longer be seeing me. I wouldn’t be enjoying a stress free drive to work every day, enjoying free lunches, talking to people who needed my help, looking forward to a well deserved 2 week vacation. Why was this happening to me? Two prior installments addressed the author’s first five lessons learned First things first…get prepared. My new full time job was finding a job. Network, network, network. Do your homework. Accept the help of others. Final lessons learned… Step out of your comfort zone. I found myself frequently doing things I hadn’t done before, or wasn’t comfortable doing. I realized that if I didn’t make changes and make the effort to do what was necessary to be successful in my job search, no one else was going to do it for me. Nothing would change and another day would be wasted. Opportunity wasn’t going to be looking for me, I had to go out and make the opportunities happen. It wasn’t easy to do, but it had to be done. Staying focused and disciplined would pay off in the end, despite the wonderful summer weather and the temptation to goof off and enjoy it. But that leads to my next step.
Treat yourself. Sometimes, you need to reward yourself and take a break from all the work. Get out, go see a movie, get some ice cream, visit the mall, visit a favorite restaurant, go for a walk, and get together with some friends or family. All work and no play will drive you crazy. It’s ok to take a break, don’t feel guilty about it. You need to recharge your batteries sometimes to stay motivated. Get a new prospective on things and just get your mind off your worries and the stress of the search.
Keep the faith. My faith played a key role during my job search. Keep positive, keep praying, ask others to pray for you, and be open to the possibility that you will find something better than you could have imagined or thought you could find on your own. Even when you think that you did everything right, and you were the best candidate for the position, you nailed the interview but didn’t get the job, don’t let it get you down. There could be something even better down the road that you weren’t aware of. Being in the right place, at the right time is where you will be when you have the faith that you are where you should be right now. It’s not scientific, but it works. Believe me. If you have a story to share or feedback, send it to newsletter@augustgroup.org
RECRUITER’S TIP – Winning a Recruiter’s Attention Contributed by Greg Taylor gtaylor@excelsiorsp.com Recruiters receive too many resumes to be responsive to all. How can you differentiate yourself? Wouldn’t it be great to be “top of mind” with a few recruiters who often post jobs matching your skills?! This tip applies to both corporate and agency recruiters. It’s impact may be more significant with agency recruiters. When communicating with a recruiter you admire and respect, be sure to ask them how you can help them. Ask them what talent they are currently hard pressed to find. You’ll startle them by asking. They’ll detect your insincerity if you are not listening to their answer. You will have been identified as phony and may do more harm to your candidacy. Listen, listen, listen. Ask questions to clarify so you understand their needs. If you can help them, assert so and be sure to follow-up, even if you are unsuccessful identifying their required talent. Promising to follow-up gives you a reason to stay in touch with the recruiter. Actually following up as promised demonstrates that you are person of commitment and follow through. You will be winning their attention. If you leave a voicemail, mention your calling in regards to their search for the talent they mentioned. If you’ve been unsuccessful, when you next connect report so with dismay and ask if there is anything else that they might be looking for. Doing so every other week may find you building a relationship with a recruiter. Have a question, you’d like to ask of a recruiter? Send it to Q&A@augustgroup.org numerous requests for such following the session.
NETWORKING TIP – What to do with ALL THOSE BUSINESS CARDS Have you ever looked at that pile of business cards you’ve collected and wondered how to manage them? Is there value in keeping them after your search? What are you going to do with them? It seems like you ought to keep them and somehow sort them or something. Many enter the data into their contact management system with notes and categorize them. That is clearly wise and highly advised, but for some that is too labor intensive and not of technical interest. Many have them safely piled ready for input when there is more “free”time. I confess that I have used the piling strategy for years. Some are entered in my contact management system, others not. I have recycled my business cards boxes to store cards I collected over the years and I have sorted and re-sorted them more times than I can count. I’ve seen others with their binders of business cards and imagined how low tech. I considered undertaking the exercise and compiling such a book of cards. I bought the sleeves that hold 20 per sheet and have now sorted over 400 cards in a binder. This is it! I have sorted my card collection by professional field, industry and otherwise. I have attorneys adjacent to accountants, bankers and other business advisors. I put consultants and entrepreneurs together sorting them by industry when possible. They’re near the business owners with more established businesses where there is a payrolled workforce. I have sorted the engineers together and divided electrical, mechanical, industrial etc.. There is a section for sales and marketing professionals, finance professionals, operations and HR professionals. Each time I get to the end of the pile I am sorting I still have cards unsorted looking for where they belong. It is a repetitive process but with multiple cycles you discover your sorting rules. Being able to turn pages permits viewing 10-20 cards at a glance I am able to make use of this data. I am finding the people quite readily now and others can browse my binder easily with interest to identifiable sections. I can share this with others readily with greater ease than handing them my PDA. It’s low tech for sure, but it’s useful, much more so than piles. Try it and you might be surprised at its value.
