FEATURE ARTICLES It seemed like a crime had been committed; released from a job I enjoyed, I hadn’t done anything wrong. People I had enjoyed working with everyday would no longer be seeing me. I wouldn’t be enjoying a stress free drive to work every day, enjoying free lunches, talking to people who needed my help, looking forward to a well deserved 2 week vacation. Why was this happening to me? Last week Mark addressed his first two lessons learned First things first…get prepared. My new full time job was finding a job. More lessons learned… Network, network, network. Networking plays a very important role in a number of ways. I got to meet other people just like me who were happy to share their successes and struggles and offer encouragement during the times when things seemed to not be going well. It’s a two way street, and although it wasn’t always easy, I tried to keep a positive attitude. It also led me to other people who could give me information about companies and industries of interest to me at my target companies. Get involved; share what you know and whom you know. Pre-call or contact your contacts in advance to make an introduction. This will make the networking experience easier and less awkward for the people you are trying to help and your contact will know who the person is ahead of time and know why they are being contacted. Do your homework. Getting informational interviews played a key role in getting a foot in the door and meeting people who worked in my target companies. Making a connection with these people could lead to an opportunity down the road. The seeds had been planted for a future crop of opportunities. Some contacts were more helpful than others, but each was a learning opportunity. Research companies on line at their websites or use tools like Dunn & Bradstreet, Hoovers, and the Rochester Business Journal. The more you know about them, the better your chances of making an impression at an interview. Accept the help of others. Working with a career counselor at RochesterWorks was also very important. Letting her know what kind of work I was looking for, making sure she had an updated resume, what my target companies were, and following up on a regular basis. Even if it was just to talk, she got to know what my personality was like. We worked as a team to establish goals, which eventually led to my new job. Avoid negative people! They aren’t helping you! You don’t need the added stress, negativity, and doubt. The lessons learned are completed in the next issue addressing Stepping out of your comfort zone, Treat yourself, and Keep the faith.
Recruiter Panel Presentation, an Enlightening Session Recruiters Gene Voss recently of Empire Beef and formerly of Eber Brothers and Excellus, and Eric Derby of The Software Scout engaged the packed conference room at RochesterWorks last Wednesday offering their insights as recruiters. Both offered tips they had long wished to share with job seekers. They were happy to have found a forum to do so. The audience was surprised at times, sometimes confused and readily engaged. The session was planned for 40 minutes but continued for 75 minutes as TAG members peppered the two professionals who happily stayed the duration. Future sessions will be planned with recruiters on a regular basis in response to numerous requests for such following the session.
RECRUITER’S TIP About that email address!! You’ve submitted your resume. You’re creating a first impression before the recruiter even opens your email containing your impressive resume. You’re excited to apply because this job is perfect for you. What’s the recruiter’s reaction when noting the candidate is BigMoneyBob@yahoo.com or Sexy14U@aol.com. Refrain from using any and all email addresses that suggest personality traits, ethnic origin, faith orientation, political persuasion, etc. Yahoo, Google and Hotmail offer addresses. Be yourself. Submit as Chris.Adams6@hotmail.com Demonstrate the use of “better judgment.” Employer’s value sound thinking.
